My background includes a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Illinois, as well as research and teaching positions at Hitachi, Boeing, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Zurich and the Nagoya Institute of Technology.</p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><p style="text-align: left;">I do <b>research</b> at the intersection of <b>artificial intelligence</b> and <b>social computing</b>, studying how computers can enable better knowledge sharing and decision making among groups of humans.</p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><p style="text-align: left;">I have <b>180 publications</b> (with<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->8000 citations, an h-index of 43, and over 11,000 downloads) and have won <b>US$7 million dollars</b> in research funding.<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->My approach is <b>multi-disciplinary</b>, and I am deeply committed to having a direct impact on <b>solving real-world problems</b>, especially in the sustainability<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->and deliberative democracy realms.</p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><p style="text-align: left;">I serve on the <b>editorial boards and program committees</b> for many of the most respected<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->journals and conferences on artificial and collective intelligence. I also serve on the advisory boards for several social computing startups, and am<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->pursuing the commercialization of my own research.</p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><p style="text-align: left;">I've taught full-semester <b>university courses on social computing</b> and given scores of tutorials and other invited presentations<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim.</p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><p style="text-align: left;">I have a long-standing commitment to engagement with the <b>international research community</b>. I've hosted many international visitors in my lab at MIT, and have done extended<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->research visits throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim.
